FAQ - All about Newborn Sessions
Whether it’s your first baby or your 5th, when searching for your newborn photographer, here are some of the most commonly asked questions:
How old does my baby need to be for our session?
>>This is a multi-layered answer: it depends on what you as the client want! Here are the pros and cons for each age range:
-1-2 weeks: Pro- baby is very sleepy, less fussy, and much more cooperative. con- you need some time to recover and may not be feeling too great yet, and siblings may need more time to adjust.
-3 weeks: Pro- baby has typically regained back to birth weight and looks a lil cuter, and you are feeling much much better with your recovery from birth. con- it’s a major growth spurt (hello cluster feeding) and babies are super hungry and more fussy. (this is not a problem for me at all, just means our session may take a little longer and you may feel unnecessarily stressed at times).
-4-6+ weeks: Pros- baby has great eye contact and has gained more weight but still small enough that they look like a newborn. You are feeling even better! Con- baby is more aware of surroundings and prefers to be held more.
>>There are always options to weigh, but regardless I have been through each stage (x3) and can help guide you through choosing the correct time frame. If our schedules do not allow for the perfect time, I promise we will make anything work! I am not afraid of any challenge thrown my way and will find ways to capture pretty memories. I have solutions for each of the cons listed above, so don’t let that intimidate you!
Each baby in all of these photos were totally different ages between 8 days to 6+ weeks!
What should my baby wear?
-They can go nakey, with diapers nearby to catch all the things! Or you are always welcome to use my curated collection of newborn swaddles and wraps. I always bring my moses basket filled with an assortment of solid colored, textured blankets and wraps.
-Many will have their babe in a custom gown, the main thing is a solid color is always the best choice!
If I want to book my session in advance, when should I do that?
I highly recommend booking in advance as my calendar is nearly full for 2021! I suggest booking 2 weeks after your due date. in years past, ob’s would let you go to 42 weeks and that is not really a thing anymore (thankfully!) so 2 weeks after your actual due date is a good time to plan for. This allows extra time on the back end for any early arrivals to gain some weight back and for you to adjust.
This also allows for you to have a spot claimed on my schedule. I have a limited number of sessions I am able to do each month, so booking a slot guarantees you for that month! We can always reschedule as needed (within reason) if something is not ideal!
What if my baby is fussy or needs to eat during our session?
OF course you can feed your baby if they are hungry! I 100% understand and can make myself useful preparing the next few things while you are feeding if needed. Newborn sessions take a little extra time due to meticulously caring for your baby’s needs. If they are fussy or need something, we will stop and take a break so you can take care of them!
And if you want photos of breastfeeding etc, that is not a problem for me. I have been there and know what a special thing that is.
Are siblings and/or pets allowed to be in the photos?
Yes! Of course! The entire immediate family is included in the session! Candids are my thing, and I want to capture memories of current life for you and your family!
If you have any other questions please feel free to reach out! As I have said before, Newborn sessions are my passion and such a gift for me! I would love to capture you and your sweet growing family!
